AORTIC DISSECTION
history and definitions:
Definition:
Aortic Dissection (AD) occurs with an intimal tear that allows redirection of blood from from the aorta (true lumen) through this defect into the aortic media creating a false lumen and a dissection plane that separates the aortic intima from the overlying aortic adventitia
Aortic Dissection (AD) occurs with an intimal tear that allows redirection of blood from from the aorta (true lumen) through this defect into the aortic media creating a false lumen and a dissection plane that separates the aortic intima from the overlying aortic adventitia
History:
- Sennertus was the first to describe the dissection process.
- Maunoir named this process Aortic dissection.
- Laennec defined the tendency of chronically dissected aorta to become aneurysmal.
- Gurin performed the first aortic fenestration procedure to treat malperfusion syndrome.
- Abbot and Paulin used cellophane wrapping of the aorta to theoretically prevent aortic rupture.
- DeBakey successfully performed primary surgical repair of aortic dissection.
